Contributions to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs) can be achieved through the enhancement of synergies between the international civil aviation air network, its infrastructure and the urban areas it serves, ICAO’s Secretary General, Dr. Fang Liu explained through an interview with UN News Centre journalists at the Habitat III Conference. More specifically, the sustainable development of air connectivity directly supports SDGs 9, 11, and 13, which respectively pertain to economic development, urban well-being, and climate change. These contributions are predicated on the existence of certain conditions, such as the effective implementation of international standards, timely coordination with other sectors of the economy, and seamless integration between aviation and other modes of transportation. UN-Habitat and ICAO will be strengthening their cooperation towards fostering these conditions.
